30 Reasons.

There are 18 days till the election and countless reasons why this country needs a change in direction. My pals Julia and Chris are curating 30reasons.org, from the website:

30 Reasons is a 30-day email and internet campaign to encourage people to vote for Barack Obama. Our goal is simple: Use design to build a logical, multi-faceted argument for Obama and make it easy to share each reason with another person.

We enlisted 30 graphic designers to create a poster that represents a reason to vote for Obama. Starting on the October 5th, we will post a new poster online every day and email it to our list. Recipients can easily share the email with other supporters and friends who are undecided.

These posters are excellent. Sign up (and sign up your friends) to receive a poster email everyday till the election. And don’t forget to vote, no matter who you’re voting for.

Twitterific.

It wasn’t until I got the iPhone that I realized how awesome Twitter is. Nothing beats waiting in line at the grocery store and reading about what your friends are doing.

The cord is cut.

Today is a special day. Today I broke free of the exorbitant monthly fees required for cable television. This weekend I cancelled both Comcast and Tivo service. I know I’m not the first (or the last) to do this, but it’s pretty big news for me.

For the past few weeks Cory and I have been paying attention to the shows we actually watch and running the numbers. I made a list of the 25 or so season passes I had in Tivo, with hardly any effort I was able to find all but a few online for free or on iTunes (what’s missing? Discovery Channel has clips from shows available as video podcasts, it’s a start...) And I actually own the entire seasons of some of these shows on DVD. On top of that how many times have I sat down for no reason and just watched what was on? How many times have I watched The Day After Tomorrow on fx? The answer is: many times.

I was paying $130/month plus $17/month to watch a handful of shows that are are almost all available for free online. The few that aren’t are only an iTunes season pass away. 

I’m hoping you realize this isn’t some stand against television. I love TV, movies, etc. But I’m just not getting my money’s worth paying for a ton of channels and shows I’m not watching. So here’s my plan:
