
All this Palin nonsense got me thinking about vice presidents and how weird it is that they are chosen, not elected. I remembered something I learned in 10th grade history (holla Mr. Kelly); which I confirmed with a quick Wikipedia search and will summarize here (with clever wit and more importantly all-uppercase words for effect):
Under the original Constitution, the Electoral College ONLY voted for the office of president NOT for president and vice president. HUH! Each elector was allowed to vote for two people for president. Whomever received the majority of votes would be president and whomever received the second highest amount of votes... you guessed it, they became vice president.
